Overview:
This activity is used in a fourth grade classroom. It is a way for the students to identify challenging spelling words, as well as have the correct spellings at the tips of their fingers. It also allows the students to use several different aspects of technology that they will use many times throughout their lives.

Objectives:

  • The students will use the Kidspiration template to create a web containing five personal spelling words.
  • The students will toggle back and forth between picture and writing view to obtain the correct spelling of the words that they have chosen.

Materials Needed:

  • Instruction cards (prepared by teacher)
  • Dictionary (just in case)
  • Any other spelling list that the students can choose from.
  • Kidspiration template

Activity Instructions:

1. Explain to the students that they are responsible for 5 words that will be challenging for them. Let the students know about all of the resources that they can use to find these words. They can use dictionaries, spelling lists(maybe from spelling bees or old books), and most importantly the Kidspiration Libraries.

2. The students will find the words that they want to work on and insert them into the web. If it is a word from an outside source, the students will click inside of one of the yellow branches and type the word in. Once it is typed in the yellow oval the student needs to click outside of the oval.

3. To type the next word the student follows the same procedure clicking inside of the next oval, and so on.

4. If the student would like to use the pictures that are available in the libraries they need to first click inside of an oval. Then they will double click on the picture that they want to include in their web.

5. after they have inserted the picture they need to toggle to writing view to retrieve the correct spelling of the word, and then toggle back to picture view.

6. They will continue with the next picture by clicking in another oval and repeating the given process.

7. Once the student has inserted all 5 words, it is time to print their web. The student simply goes to file on the top tool bar, and down to print clicking once, and then ok.

8. Once it has been printed the web is turned in to the teacher for final approval.
