Overview: During a unit on Winter/Snow the students will discuss the activities that we enjoy both indoors and outdoors. Various trade books on the topic will be shared and extended throughout the unit. The students will complete this activity as one of the Language Arts centers.

Standards: The lesson is in alignment with the North Canton City School’s Science course of study regarding a unit on the weather. The students will be able to observe, describe, and record elements of weather. It is also aligned with the writing conventions standard in the Academic Content Standards for Language Arts.

Preparation:

  • Gather books about winter/snow
  • Load the Winter Activity Sort on the computers

Activity/Steps

  1. Read and extend various trade books regarding winter/snow during whole group Language Arts time.
  2. Explain the sorting activity during Language Arts center time.
  3. Students will work independently to complete the sort and to add at least two sentences with each activity.
  4. The students will print their work-including the writing activity.

Assessment: The students should have placed the pictures in the proper categories and should have 2 sentences with proper form (caps./punct.). The pictures can be in any category as long as they are able to explain their reasoning.
