As
a cooperative effort between Mrs. Posthlewait, Mrs. Weber
and Mrs. Heban, the teachers developed a whale unit over
two weeks that offered the students in the three classrooms
a wide variety of whale activities. Students used a tic-tac-toe board
of whale activities with the center square being a book
report. Each student had to choose a tic-tac-toe that
went through the center so that each week, a book report
was written with two additional choice activities to
complete the tic-tac-toe. Each of the classrooms had
different activities, so the children moved to the rooms
that offered their choices. Some of the activities were
computer research, video, painting, whale mobile, fantasy
story, and pattern block whales. Please see the Whale
Tale presentations of Mrs.
Weber and Mrs.
Postlethwait for their contributions.
In Mrs.
Heban's Bee room, a whale ABC activity was developed
that had 10 whale shaped cards. On one side was the name
of a whale. On the other side were facts about that whale
such as baleen or toothed, weight, length and where it
lives. The children had to put the ABC whales in order
and read the names to the teacher. They then were challenged
to sort the whales by type, to order them by weight,
length, etc. The whale cards were very interactive and
informative.

Another activity was an ABC paper
with a drawing of each of the ten whales. The students had
to identify the whales by matching the picture to a classroom
poster of the same whales. The whale drawings came from the
excellent website of Enchanted Learning. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/whales/
Another
activity the children did very well with was making a
labelled drawing using the overhead. Transparencies of
whales from the Enchanted Learning website were made.
The children had a choice of which whale they wanted
to enlarge and copy. Some went on to complete the underwater
scene while others stayed with a detailed labelled drawing.
The children enjoyed the various activities, having the
freedom to choose and move about responsibly, and to
learn about whales in so many different media.
