Chronology of North Canton School Buildings


1816 - 1996


1816
Village of Greentown was founded

1831
Village of New Berlin was founded

1835
One-room log schoolhouse was build on Portage Road (now City Hall parking lot).

1845
Larger, one-room, red sided building replaced log school. It was later bricked-up but remained red.

1888
Construction began on the first "public" school on Portage Street (six rooms).

1890
Four rooms were added to the Portage building.

1900
Four more rooms were added to the Portage building.

1918
New Berlin became North Canton

1920
Classrooms and office space were added to the Portage Street side of the Portage building. This addition eliminated the front section, including the bell tower of the 1888 building.

1924
The west wing was added to the 1920 addition of the Portage building. The new wing contained a combination gymnasium and auditorium, classrooms, and lavatories.

1928
Greentown School (in a separate school district) was built housing all grade levels.

1929
The High School in North Canton was built on Charlotte Street, housing grades 7 through 12. The Portage building then housed kindergarten through sixth grade and was known as The Grade School.

1955
A small building was constructed west of the Portage Street building.

Six classrooms were added to the Greentown School building.


1957
Hoover High School opened on Fair Oaks Street
.
Orchard Hill Elementary opened on Jonathan Street.

The Greentown School System was consolidated with the North Canton School system.
The Greentown building became an elementary school.

The former high school on Charlotte Street became a junior high building.

1959
Four classrooms were added to Hoover High School.

Clearmount Elementary was built with 12 classrooms.

A cafeteria, gym, library, and kindergarten classrooms were added to Orchard Hill Elementary.

1960
North Canton became a city.

Six classrooms and kindergarten rooms were added to Clearmount.

1964
A lecture room was added to Hoover High School

1965
Twenty-four classrooms were added to Hoover High School

1968
Kindergarten rooms and a cafeteria were added to Greentown Elementary
.
1969
Nine classrooms, a cafeteria, and a resource center were added to the Junior High building on Charlotte Street.

1970
Northwood Elementary School was build on Hume Street.

Two classrooms and a library were added to Clearmount Elementary.

Two classrooms were added to Greentown Elementary.

Offices, three classrooms, and a special education room were added to Orchard Hill Elementary.

1973
Locker rooms were added to Hoover High School.

1976
The Hoover High North Campus was built on Seventh Street to house vocational classes.

The Hoover High School building on Fair Oaks Street was named the Hoover High South Campus.

1982
The Portage Street building was closed.

1989
The Mary L. Evans Kindergarten Center was opened in the one-story wing of the Portage Street building.

1994
Four classrooms were added to Northwood Elementary.

A gymnasium was added to Clearmount Elementary and Orchard Hill Elementary.

At Greentown Elementary eight classrooms were added and the resource center, cafeteria, kitchen, and computer lab were enlarged.

The Portage Street building was renovated and re-opened for pre-school and elementary students.

1995
A 190,000 square foot addition is being made to the Hoover High North Campus to house a comprehensive, one-site high school. Renovation to the existing building include art and music rooms, business education classrooms, and home economics classrooms.
