North Canton City Schools elementary teachers explored ways to integrate visual learning and thinking skills into their curriculum areas during a Professional Development study group. After becoming comfortable with Kidspiration, they created lessons and concept maps for their classes. These lessons are showcased to be used as a resource for educators. 1. Cloud Sort Activity

Description: As part of a unit on weather, discuss the attributes of various types of clouds. Students will recreate each type of cloud then complete the Kidspiration activity, Cloud Sort.

In this activity, the student sorts pictures of clouds into the proper category: cirrus, cumulus, stratus.


2. When This Box is Full

Description: Our class read When This Box Is Full by Patricia Lillie. In this book a child fills an empty box with items to represent each month of the year. We used this book to help us learn the months in order. We each decorated a "treasure box" for our favorite month and filled it with items to represent this special month. Many students chose their birthday month.

Then, we made a group book using the model of When This Box Is Full. In our book we filled a soup pot. Since you would make soup in a day instead of a year, we used times of the day in our story instead of months.

These Kidspiration activities were designed to accompany the unit.


3. Liquid Measurements

Description: Students sometimes have a difficult time understanding the liquid measurements. This activity allows the students to see and move the cups, pints, and quarts into a gallon.


4. Sentence Structure

Description: Many deaf and ESL students have a difficult time understanding the correct word order for sentence structures. The students are given a picture. Beside each picture are three sentences. Only one sentence is in the correct word order. The student will click on the wrong answers and then click the erase button. The teacher will be able to view the picture and the sentence the student has chosen. The teacher may view the choices on the computer or the student may print out their answers.


5. States & Capitals

Description: As part of the fourth grade curriculum students are expected to learn the fifty states and their capital cities. This activity is a way to practice their knowledge about the states and their capitals.


6. Winter Activity Sort

7. States Around Ohio

Description: During a unit on Ohio, the students will learn much information about the history of Ohio and the geography of Ohio. They will learn the states that border Ohio. This activity will serve as a quick and fun assessment of geography skills.


8. Comparing Forecasts to Today's Weather

Description: The students will compare a weather forecast from the newspaper with the day’s actual weather. They will discuss the fact that forecasts are predictions based on observed and recorded data. They will discuss ways that forecasts can help them make decisions about outdoor activities.


9. Solid Figures Sort

10. Autobiography Timeline

11. Endangered Animals Report

Description: This activity should be used to help students plan an outline for their report on an endangered animal. First have the students choose library books to read through to find information on their selected animal. As they come to facts or information that they need for their outline, they should type in the information in the “writing” view of this activity. The students will need to save their work on a disk or print out their final draft once they have completed each section of their outline.


12. Three Classes of Levers

Description: Use this activity after all 3 classes of levers have been discussed and taught to the students. Have the students review the three classes by reading the beginning of the activity. 13. Equivalent Forms of Fractions

14. Personal Spelling Words

Description: This activity is used in a fourth grade classroom. It is a way for the students to identify challenging spelling words, as well as have the correct spellings at the tips of their fingers. 15. Flat Stanley - Parts of a Story PRE-VOC Activity

Description: Before reading Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown, students will assign words, names, and phrases to the appropriate heading of a story: Characters, Setting, Problem, Events, Solution. This activity facilitates vocabulary development and encourages students to make predictions about the story. It is used before reading, but it may be an ongoing activity as the story progresses. Students may make the necessary changes. This will be easily facilitated through a Kidspiration template.


16. Horrible Harry and the Green Slime Character Analysis Activity

30. Cultural Comparison of Native Americans and Pilgrims

Description: As part of a unit on Native Americans and Pilgrims, introduce the practices and products of the two cultures. Complete the Kidspiration sorting activity.


31. Simple Water Cycle

Description: As part of a unit on weather, discuss how water changes from liquid to a gas and back to a liquid as part of a continuous cycle. 32. Fraction Activities

Description: In the first activity the children will match the pie graphs with the name of the fraction. 34. The Three Bears

Description: This is an activity in comparing and contrasting two stories, The Three Bears and Abuelo and the Three Bears. The first story is the traditional fairy tale. The second one is a different version of the story with some Spanish words and phrases.
