Overview: The students will compare a weather forecast from the newspaper with the day’s actual weather. They will discuss the fact that forecasts are predictions based on observed and recorded data. They will discuss ways that forecasts can help them make decisions about outdoor activities.

Preparation:

  • Bring to class the weather forecast found in the newspaper the day before.
  • Load the weather forecast template on your computer.
  • On a sheet of newsprint, make a chart like the one on the template.

Procedure:

  • Have the students gather information about today’s weather: cloud cover, precipitation, wind, and temperature.
  • Record the information on the chart.
  • Read the weather forecast from the newspaper and record it on the chart.
  • Have the students discuss any differences they see between the data they collected and the weather forecast from the newspaper.
  • Discuss how a forecast can help us decide what to wear and what outside activities are possible.
  • Explain the Kidspiration activity to the students.
  • Each morning, each student will make their weather prediction by choosing a picture to show cloud cover, precipitation and wind. They will type in the temperature.
  • In the afternoon, each student will show the actual weather in the appropriate spaces.
  • Print each student’s work.
  • At the end of the day, discuss how close their predictions were
