Overview: As part of a unit on weather, discuss how water changes from liquid to a gas and back to a liquid as part of a continuous cycle. Students will conduct an experiment demonstrating that things happen to water to change its properties. Students will complete the Kidspiration activity to demonstrate their understanding of the steps of the water cycle.

Standard: Physical science, grade one, Nature of Matter, #3 explore and observe that things can happen to matter to change its properties, such as heating freezing, or being exposed to light.

Preparation:

  • Collect books on weather.
  • Conduct a discussion on precipitation/evaporation. Define terms. Introduce water cycle. Identify the many sources of water forms that exist on earth. Identify the type of cloud that carries precipitation
  • Assemble supplies for experiment on evaporation. Two clear cups per pupil, hot water (to be poured by the teacher).
  • Science recording journal
  • Load the Kidspiration template for completing the water cycle.

Activity/Steps:
Children will work in pairs. A cup will be filled about half full with hot water. One child will place an empty cup over the cup filled with water and observe the change that takes place. The other student will record the results in a drawing. Class will discuss the sequence of events in the experiment. The cups of water will then be placed on the windowsill and left to evaporate. Students will continue to record results as changes in water levels occur. Discussion will follow to identify the sequence and processes that took place and draw conclusions.

Assessment:

  • To assess the child’s understanding of the order and process of the water cycle.
  • Explain the activity. Read the labels.
  • Each child will complete the activity by placing the correct picture into the correct box as it is labeled to represent that step in the cycle.
  • Child should print his work.

Assessment: Student will correctly sequence 4 of 4 pictures into the cycle. No penalty for mislabeling the pictures provided the sequence is correct.
