Overview: During a unit on Ohio, the students will learn much information about the history of Ohio and the geography of Ohio. They will learn the states that border Ohio. This will serve as a quick and fun assessment of geography skills.

Standards: This lesson is in alignment with the North Canton City School’s course of study regarding geography. The students will be able to identify the state of Ohio on appropriate maps of the nation, hemisphere, or world. It is also in alignment with the writing conventions standard in the Academic Content Standards for Language Arts.

Preparation:
Use maps to locate Ohio and its surrounding states
Load the States Around Ohio activity on all of the computers

Activity/Steps
1. Discuss the location of Ohio and the bordering states.
2. Explain the activity during Language Arts center time.
3. Students will work independently to complete the activity and to add at least one sentence with each state that includes a directional word. (Ex: Kentucky is south of Ohio.)
4. The students will print their work-including the writing activity.

Assessment: The students should have placed the pictures of the states in the proper places and should have 1 sentence with proper form (caps./punct.) for each state. The directional word used in each sentence should be used appropriately.
