Overview: As part of a unit on weather, discuss the attributes of various types of clouds. Students will recreate each type of cloud then complete the Kidspiration activity, Cloud Sort.

Standards:
Physical Sciences, Grade One, Nature of Matter
#1 Classify objects according to the materials they are made of and their physical properties.

Preparation:

  • Gather books about clouds
  • Load the cloud sort template on your computers
  • Gather materials:
    • 9 by 12 inch blue construction paper (2 sheets per student)
    • 9 by 12 inch gray construction paper (1 sheet per student),
    • 10 cotton balls per student,
    • one 2 by 12 inch piece of cotton batting for each student

Activity/Steps:

  • Read books about clouds
  • Discuss the various types of clouds: cirrus, cumulus and stratus
  • Watch the sky for examples of various types of clouds
  • Make pictures of each type of cloud
    1. For cirrus clouds, give each student one sheet of blue paper and one cotton ball. Have student break cotton ball into several pieces and stretch each piece very thin. Glue these to the upper part of the paper (sky) and draw a scene that would take place on a day that has cirrus clouds in the sky.
    2. For cumulus clouds, give each student one sheet of blue construction paper and nine cotton balls. Have students group the cotton balls on the upper part of the paper (sky) and glue them in place. Draw a scene that would take place on a day that has cumulus clouds in the sky.
    3. For stratus clouds, give each student one piece of batting and one sheet of gray construction paper. Glue the batting on the upper part of the paper (sky) and draw a scene that would take place on a day that has stratus clouds in the sky.
  • Explain the cloud sort activity to the students.Each student will complete the activity by sorting the cloud pictures into the appropriate boxes.Print each student’s work.

Assessment: Student must correctly place 12 clouds (75%) in the proper box.
