The
Mariners' Museum - Newport News, Virginia
The Mariners' Museum Age of Exploration On-line Curriculum Guide. The materials
that follow address maritime discovery from ancient times to Captain Cook's
1768 voyage to the South Pacific. Teachers can use the curriculum guide in a
variety of ways. It is especially appropriate for grades 5, 8, and high school
world history and geography. The curriculum weaves together visual images, video,
and text, as well as materials that can be downloaded or printed for transparencies,
presentations, or reports. It includes lesson plans, vocabulary, links to related
web sites, and guides to other reference materials.

Spaniards explored America in the 1540's on trails that became our highways.
Conquest Records describe Indian villages, attacked then diseased, along those
trails. Pioneers settled those village clearings; our cities are built on them.

Exhibit
An Exhibit of the Library of Congress, Washington, DC.The exhibition examines
the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers,
conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600. The exhibit is divided into six sections:
"What Came To Be Called "America", The Mediterranean World", "Christopher Columbus:
Man and Myth", Inventing America", " Europe Claims America ", and "Epilogue".

The Teacher Guide and Student Activities in this section were created as a resource
of ideas. You are welcome to copy them. Many of the activities stand alone but
some are created to enhance a section of text from
The Mariner's Museum site.The puzzles in the student section are adapted
from the Biographies and Vocabulary sections. The answer keys are located in
the Teacher section. Student Activites can be accessed from the Teacher Activities
but not vice versa. These activities are adaptable for fifth grade through high
school students. The Student Activities are designed for use by individual students
as an enriching activity or they can be printed and used by an entire class.
