"PLAY BALL"
WEBQUEST

Introduction

"Surf the Net" to find out more in-depth information on professional baseball parks. The purpose is to use research, language arts, math, and problem solving skills to compare various stadiums.

The Task

Research the baseball stadiums and teams of your choice

Gather interesting facts about each ballpark.

Create graphs representing the deepest point of each field and the amount of seating available.

Choose your favorite ballpark and tell us why it is "the best"!

    Resources

Go to the Greentown Elementary School Baseball Theme Unit Page to find sources for your research.

Note: You may want to begin your research at either the "Major League Teams" section or the "Baseball Legends: Ballparks" section.

    The Process

Print out the Research Page provided here. Complete the page using the internet resources you found on the Greentown Elementary School Baseball Theme Unit Page.

Use graph paper to do the following:

    1. Make a pictorgraph comparing the seating capacity of the four ballparks. Calculate the average seating capacity of the four ballparks.
    2. Make a bar graph comparing the distance of the deepest point on each of the four playing fields.

    FOR EACH GRAPH YOU MAKE:

    • Include a title, labels, a key (if necessary) and your name.
    • Be sure that the graphs are neat, colorful, and easy to read.

Using your research notes and graphs, select which park is the best overall. Write a one page paper giving your choice and three reasons for choosing that park. Use information from this project and any other information that you would wish to inclue (eg. location, team, concession stands!) The paper must have an introduction, body and conclusion.

    Evaluation

Research page is completed, accurate, and neat.

Graphs are accurate, neat, include needed information, titles, keys, and labels.

Ballpark composition includes introduction, body, and conclusion. It will include three examples for your point of view. At least one is from the research paper. It is the required length(1 to 2 pages).

Project is accurate, neat, spelled correctly, grammatically correct, and is completed on time.

    Conclusion

Upon completion of this project the students will gain a better understanding of the use of graphs to organize information. They will have used problem solving skils to sort research information and form a conclusion based on that research.
