Mary L. Evans
The Kindergarten Center is named for Mary L. Evans.  She was North Canton's first kindergarten teacher, hired by the Board of Education in 1929.  She was born in New Berlin, Ohio ( now North Canton )  on May 27, 1903.  Her career in the North Canton schools spanned forty years ( 1929-1969 ).  She taught kindergarten, first, and second grades for thirty years, then ended her career as elementary supervisor for ten years, retiring in 1969.

Miss Evans brought a special kind of trust to the little boys and girls, as they ventured out into the world for the first time.  Mary also instilled and understanding of what school and learning were all about.  It is our hope that all who pass through the Center, children and adults alike, will be touched by the magic of Miss Mary L. Evans.

The Kindergarten Center was opened in September of 1989.  It occupies classrooms in the Portage Street School Annex constructed in 1952 for first grades.

Extended Day Program
We have chosen to use Chapter 1 funds to implement an Extended Day ( full day )  Program.  This early intervention program is designed for our students who may need additional assistance.  These children are identified through a screening process which takes place during the second week of school.  Participation in the program is by parent consent.  The children attend one-half of their day in a "regular" classroom, and the other classrooms share the kindergarten philosophy and teaching practices as mentioned above.  We have noted significant progress in these students and are very pleased with the program.

School Mascot
On Election Day, 1989, the students at the Mary L. Evans Kindergarten Center voted by secret ballot on the school mascot.  The Koala picture below became the school mascot.  We call ourselves the Kindergarten Koalas.  Our school colors are red and white.
