The Rough Face Girl

A Comparison of Two Cinderella Tales
Inspired by the Internet Project
Cinderella Around the World
What makes a story a Cinderella story?
This was our guiding question for this project.

Using the Elements of a Cinderella Story,
we compared a Disney version of Cinderella
with the Native American story The Rough Face Girl.
We looked for these elements:

1. A kind-hearted, but mistreated main character
2. An evil step family
3. A magical guardian
4. A royal character who comes to the rescue
5. The true beauty and love of nature
6. The main character must show proof

We became "element detectives." Below is what we found

1. Ella 1. The Rough Face Girl
2. Wicked stepmother,
step sisters,
Anastasia,
Drizella
2. Two evil, cruel,
older sisters
(not step sisters)
3. Fairy godmother 3. Invisible Being's sister
4. The Prince 4. Invisible Being
5. the old horse,
Bruno, the dog
Jaq and Gus, the mice
5. Rainbows, stars, sun,
moon, trees, animals
6. Must prove shoe fits
6. Must prove she can see
the Invisible Being
Further Explorations
After comparing these two Cinderella tales,
we enjoyed performing a Reader's Theater
version of The Rough Face Girl
entitled The Hidden One.
Special thanks to project participant Carole Underwood for sharing this source.

Next, we drew pictures of the elements.
In Writers' Workshop, we wrote about them,
demonstating our understanding.
Please see below.

In both our classroom, and with our librarian, Mrs. Buckley,
the children continue to be "element detectives"
as we enjoy many different Cinderella tales from around the world.
Drawing the Elements - Writing About the Elements
ELEMENT 1
CINDERELLA - ROUGH FACE GIRL

In the Cinderella story, Cinderella was the character
who was mistreated by her evil stepmother
and evil stepsisters.
Mary

In a village there lived a poor man who had three
daughters. The two older daughters were cruel
to the younger one. They called her
Rough Face Girl because her skin was rough
from them putting her in the fire.
Jasmine
ELEMENT 2
DRIZELLA - CRUEL SISTER

Drizella, the sister in the story, is part of the
evil step family. The family was bad to Ella.
Ella is a good and kind-hearted girl to them.
She is the one to always be blamed.
The sister should be blamed.
Lillian

In the story The Rough Face Girl, she has
an evil sister who tries to marry the Invisible Being,
but she doesn’t, the Rough Face Girl does.
James
ELEMENT 3
FAIRY GODMOTHER - PATIENT ONE

In Cinderella the fairy godmother
is the magical guardian.
She waved her wand and changed Cinderella
into a beautiful princess.
Nicholas

I drew the Patient One. She is a character
in The Rough Face Girl. She is like
the fairy godmother to the Rough Face Girl.
She is the magical guardian.
Addie
ELEMENT 4
PRINCE - INVISIBLE BEING

In the story Cinderella, the prince
came to the rescue for Cinderella.
They they got married after the ball.
This is the element of how a
royal character comes to the rescue.
Sarah

From The Rough Face Girl, I drew
the Invisible Being who comes to the rescue.
He is part of royal heritage.
Michael
ELEMENT 5
ANIMAL FRIENDS - EARTH SYMBOLS

There is a dog and mice in the story Cinderella who are her friends. That’s what I drew.
It is the element of true beauty and love of nature.
Graham

My element in The Rough Face Girl was the
true beauty and love of nature because painted
on the wigwam were the symbols of the earth.
Matthew
ELEMENT 6
GLASS SLIPPER - SEEING INVISIBLE BEING

In this picture of Cinderella, she is proving
the slipper fit her because whoever tried
on the slipper and it fit, the prince would marry.
Ryan

In the story The Rough Face Girl,
she must prove that she sees the Invisible Being.
She does and the Invisible Being
marries the sister friend
and they go off in a boat together.
