The Korean Cinderella

Korean Cinderella, by Shirley Climo, is the story of Pear Blossom who must deal with Omoni and Peony, her mean stepmother and stepsister. Many magic creatures help her complete the impossible tasks that are asked of her. She attends the festival where she loses her straw shoe in the river. The magistrate looks for the beautiful girl who fits the shoe and finds Pear Blossom. They live happily ever after.

Our class was visited by Mrs. Weber's daughter-in-law, Heather, who was born in Korea. Heather told us that this story is different from the way she heard the story when she was a little girl. In her version, there is no shoe and Pear Blossom does not marry the Magistrate. She just climbs up to heaven at the end of the story.

Heather told us that the brightly colored designs in the illustrations are traditional Korean designs that can be found in churches, paintings and books. We decided to try making some designs of our own to frame our drawings. We drew some of the items that were in the story like the frog, ox, sparrows, kettle, vase, shoes and dress. Heather showed us how to write the Korean characters.

Breanna drew PearBlossom in her "hombok" and a bowl of fruit from the story.
Bethany drew the "hombok" and the sparrow.
Kayla, Megan and Yanni chose to draw the fruit bowl from the story.
We also saw Heather's traditional Korean dress ("hombok") and learned how to bow. Then we ate mandu (fried dumplings), cucumber kimchee and fried rice. It was delicious!
