Jan Brett Author Study

Our class did an Author Study on Jan Brett.  She is one of our favorite authors.  We love all of her books - especially the ones with Hedgie in them! We chose to use our Author Study of Jan Brett for the Frosty Readers Project because a lot of her books have a winter setting - which is something we do not experience often in South Carolina.  Some of the activities that we did during our study included:  designing our own mittens and writing about them, comparing The Hat and The Mitten using a Venn Diagram, making Story Triangles (beginning, middle, and end), creating character maps, writing poems, researching hedgehogs, writing letters to Jan Brett, and hosting a Reader's Theater of The Hat!  We hope that you enjoy viewing some of our work below.  You may also visit our class web site to see more of our work and pictures of our play based on The Hat.

I like it in the story when Lisa didn't know her

She got the stocking back at the end of the story.
A hedgehog found it and was wearing it as a hat!

The trolls' names are Tig and Mig.
Right away they hopped out of the bushes.
Over and over they took stuff.
Lots of times they got caught by Treva.
Lots of the things they took were clothes.
Some of the trolls were nice.

Some of the children chose to do creative writings inspired from one of the stories we read. This was an option some children chose for independent activities.

Gingerbread Baby
By: Jasmine Parks

The story is about the Gingerbread baby. An old lady made a gingerbread baby that came alive. The gingerbread baby is supposed to be a gingerbread boy. The gingerbread baby ran out the door. Then the old lady tries to get the gingerbread baby. Animals go after the gingerbread baby to try to eat it. People also run after the gingerbread. The gingerbread baby smells a familiar smell and goes after it. He sees a gingerbread house. The baby goes into the house. A boy named Matti catches the gingerbread baby and keeps him in the house forever.

Hedgie
By: Katelyn Everett

Hedgie is a hedgehog. He is in almost every one of Jan Brett's books. Jan Brett wrote many books. Some of the books she wrote has Hedgie in them a lot. These books are The Hat and The Mitten.

Hedgie is a great animal because he is a hedgehog and I love hedgehogs. I love their color and texture. He has thorns all over his body. He has small feet, and a big black nose. His body is brown and his thorns are gray.
Hedgie's home is in a tree. The house is made of wood, to keep Hedgie warm during the cold seasons. During the hot seasons, he stays cool by staying in shady places.

I am Hedgie in our class play about The Hat. I love Hedgie!

Why I Like Mig and Tig
By: Betty Morris

I like Mig and Tig because they are so cute. I like Christmas Trolls because in that book Mig and Tig's hair sticks up all over the place. I think they are so funny! Mig and Tig started to know what Christmas was all about by the end of the story. That made me happy.

A Letter to Lisa from Hedgie
By: Chris Parker

Dear Lisa,

It's me the silly hedgehog that ran off with your stocking. I'm sorry if I got holes in your stocking. I will be happy to buy you another one. I didn't mean to take it. Please don't be mad at all the other animals. They were just copying me.

From the silliest hedgehog you know,
Hedgie

After reading so many books with Hedgie in them, we just had to learn more about those cute, little animals called hedgehogs.  Below are some of the most interesting facts we learned about hedgehogs through our research.
