| Our class
read The Hat by Jan Brett. We were so inspired by the story that we clapped
at the end of the reading. Then we thought about experiences we have had
that were similar to the main character in thestory, the hedgehog. We really
found ways to connect to the hedgehog as we reflected on when others have laughed at us and we felt that perhaps we didn't have a friend in the world. Most of these experiences were related to falling down but one student shared his experience of others laughing at him when his hair was cut short. He reported that he kept his cap on that day and others tried to pull it off. We also wrote to Jan Brett, thanking her for writing this story and asking for more information about hedgehogs. Many of us were wondering how to pick one up. We also were curious about the diet of te hedgehog so we asked her to tell us what she fed her hedgehog for dinner. Another day we wrote story problems involving the characters in the story. Two of these follow: A hedgehog was walking along the road. Along came a cat and a goose. How many legs to these animals have all together? The pig, the goose, the hedgehog and the horse went for a walk one day. How many eyes do these animals have all together? We continued our study as we read The Mitten, noting similarites and differences between these stories. We are looking foward to our next visit to the library to look for more of Jan Brett's books. We want everyone to be sure to read this book. We think you will agree that it is an enjoyable one to share together. |
