Stellaluna

Our class read the book Stellaluna by Janell Cannon as we began our study about bats. In this book Stellaluna and her mother are separated when attacked by an owl. Stellaluna escapes only to land in a bird nest. She must follow the rules of the nest if she wants to stay. She must eat bugs, couldn’t hang by her feet and sleep in the nest. One day while out flying she finds that she is separated from the birds. She is so tired that she sleeps upside down. Stellaluna is awakened by some bats that help her find her mother. Stellaluna visits the birds and tells them that she is a bat. She can hardly wait to show the bats how she can fly at night. They fly all over, but as night approaches the birds discover that they can’t see, so Stellaluna rescues them.

After we read Stellaluna, we brainstormed various ways we could change the story. We decided to change how Stellaluna discovered she was a bat and found her mother.

Stellaluna woke up. She heard the hooting of some owls nearby.
“Oh my! What is that sound? It is some owls. I have to fly away as fast as I can,” cried Stellaluna.

She flew quickly to an island that was filled with fruit trees. The island did have any bugs for her to eat. She had to eat the fruit or she would starve.

“Yum, this is delicious! I must have some more!” exclaimed Stellaluna. She ate until she was full.

While she was eating the fruit from the trees, a group of fruit-eating bats arrived on the island. These bats spent the day in a cave with Stellaluna. She told the bats her story about losing her mother. The bats knew Stellaluna’s mother, so when they left the island they took Stellaluna directly to her mother.

Stellaluna and her mother were very happy to see each other again. They lived happily ever after.
