The Rough Face Girl

The students in the Bee Room listened while Mrs. Heban read The Rough Face Girl by American storyteller Rafe Martin. We enjoyed the pictures and were happy that the rough face girl ended up with the Invisible Being in the end since she was so kind and her sisters so mean.

It didn't take long for the students to recognize that this was really a Native American Cinderella story. They picked out all the similarities and differences and organized them on a Venn diagram.

For our Kidspiration activity, there is a sort of story elements. The kids can click and drag the items to the correct box. The sort is self-checking because the second box of directions tells you that you are correct if the color of the word matches the color of the title of the book. Using the listening ear and the writing view, students can rewrite the story and hear it told in their own words.
