the Yellow Brick Road
The
Wizard of Oz, the first American fairy tale, was published a
hundred years ago and continues to delight children today. Our
second grade class began the school year with an Oz theme, complete
with a yellow brick road, the twister and all of the Oz characters.
I read
a version of the story published by Scholastic Inc. and students
enjoyed the original movie. Numerous lessons centered around
Oz: estimating and counting the bricks in our yellow brick road,
writing acrostic poems and letters from Dorothy's perspective,
learning about Kansas and tornadoes.
A highlight
of the theme was a reading recital for parents that presented
six scenes and songs especially written for the class. Each
student portrayed a character from the Wizard of Oz. It was
a wonderful occasion to celebrate what the students have learned
about reading orally with meaning, expression and clarity. Transformed
into Emerald City, our classroom displayed our Oz projects and
Oz-freshments were served.
Our
Kidspiration project is an opportunity to match Oz characters
with their quotes. Please visit our class web site http://www.bloomfieldcsd.org/Rosati2/Main/Main.htm
