Overview:
Several items are shown along with their costs. The student needs to determine
how many pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters it will take to buy an object,
as well as different numbers of coins that will work.
Instructions:
-
Open the spreadsheet to be seen by the entire class, or
have individual students open it at their own computers.
-
Four items and their prices are shown at the top of the
spreadsheet.
-
Have the students fill in the boxes below the price with
the quantities of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters that they think
it would take to buy that item.
-
As they do so, the value of the coins they have chosen will
be shown at the bottom.
-
As they get a corrent answer, have them see if there is
more than one way to equal that price.
-
For the fifth item, you or they can put in any price and
then have them see what coins are needed to buy the item.
-
Use this activity to explore the value of coins and adding
coins.
