2003 VIKING - "YOUTHFUL" National critiquing services awarded top-rankings to the 2003 Viking, themed "Youthful." Each entry is judged on several criteria in categories including concept, coverage, writing, photography and design. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), a department of Columbia University judged the book to be a Gold Medalist, its highest ranking, earning 939 out of 1000 points. Additionally, the Viking received All-Columbian Honors for special merit in photography and design. The Viking was awarded the 2003 Pacemaker award, given by National Scholastic Press Association ( » http://www.studentpress.org/nspa/winners/ypm03.html ). This award - considered the Pulitzer Prize of yearbook journalism - was given to 29 yearbooks from across the nation. The National Scholastic Press Association judged the 2003 Viking to be an All-American, its highest ranking. Additional Marks of Distinction were given in the areas of coverage, design, writing & editing, and photography. The judge was complimentary of the staff's work. "The photos, headlines, copy, captions, layouts, all aspects of this book are outstanding and most impressive!" the judge wrote. "You have done an excellent job with this yearbook." Locally, the Viking was entered in the Great Lakes Scholastic Press Association's (GLIPA) critiquing service, a department of Bowling Green State University. The Viking received a Buckeye ranking, the highest ranking offered, earning 960 out of 1000 points.
